The Meaning of the ʻŌhiʻa Lehua
The ʻŌhiʻa Lehua is more than just a flower—it is a symbol of Hawaiʻi itself. In Hawaiian tradition, the lehua represents love, resilience, and transformation. It is often the first blossom to emerge after lava flows, bringing new life where there was once only destruction. For us, the lehua reflects our own journey—rising again after loss, deeply rooted in aloha, and blooming with renewed beauty. This is why we chose it as the heart of our logo: a reminder that healing, like the lehua, is both delicate and powerful.

Our Story
In 2014, two moms came together with a dream: to create a sanctuary of care, healing, and aloha.
From that vision, Serenity Spa Maui was born.
As the years unfolded, Serenity grew with us. We shifted our focus to couples, refreshed the space with new design and furnishings, and became a beloved retreat for both locals and travelers. That growth gave us the courage to expand, and in 2018, we opened our second location:
Spa Breathe at the Maui Kā‘anapali Villas.
Two years later, the world shifted with Covid. We had to close Spa Breathe and pour our hearts back into our first baby, Serenity. Through that season, it was the locals who carried us—their support kept our doors open and gave us the strength to try again.
In 2022, we expanded Serenity in the same building, adding another couples room, a facial room, and an intimate pedicure station. For a moment, it felt like we were rising stronger than ever.
Then the fires swept through Lahaina. Overnight, everything was gone. For months, there was no clear direction, no hope. In February 2024, we made peace with what we thought was the end of our chapter and officially closed our license. But the Universe had other plans. Just hours later, a message arrived from a chiropractic doctor asking if we were still searching for a space. Two weeks later, Serenity was alive again—this time in a stepping-stone home that held us as we healed and rebuild.
Now, in September 2025, we’ve found the space that feels like home. Roots are ready to be planted. Serenity Spa Maui is rising once again—stronger, deeper, and more intentional than ever before.
At the heart of Serenity is the spirit of ho‘oponopono—“I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.” We believe true healing begins with making things right within ourselves and with others.
This practice is the pulse of our spa, guiding us to hold space for every guest to pause, breathe, and simply be.
For us, Serenity is more than a spa. It is a story of resilience, community, and love. A home away from home, where every guest is welcomed like Ohana, nurtured as if they were us on the table.
This is our rebirth.

Co-owned by Susana Isola and Krystal “Kito” Cunningham,
Serenity Spa Maui was born from resilience, legacy, and a shared vision of creating a place of deep healing on Maui.
Susana brings more than twenty years of experience in hospitality. With her heart rooted in Aloha and her dedication to service, Serenity Spa Maui has been her lifelong dream. For her, this is more than a business — it’s the culmination of years of hard work and heart.
Kito is of Hawaiian ancestry mixed with Filipino heritage, with roots that stretch across generations in Hawai‘i. She carries “coco” from a lineage tied to the storied lands of Hāna. On her Filipino side, her great-great-grandmother migrated to Hawai‘i and worked as a Sakada in the fields of Kaua‘i, later becoming known as a sought-after healer. Raised in Lahaina, Kito has spent over two decades in massage therapy. For her, Serenity Spa Maui is a continuation of her roots — a place where she honors the past, shows up fully in the present, and welcomes each guest with the aloha that shaped her journey.
Together, they’ve created a sanctuary where heritage meets healing, and every guest is welcomed to ground, restore, and reconnect in the heart of Maui.
